Cold Calling 3-bets

Priit’s Strategy:

First thing to note is never to cold call a 3b with AA in order to be tricky –  always 4b.

Secondly, the only non AA hands we should consider 4b with are AKQQss, AKK*ss, AKQ9ss if villain 3b-betting wider(or if he’s very short which consequently usually widens their range) but even this hands are calls when IP with looose passive weak fish behind because we want them in and also there’s no need to diminish our positinal advantage.

1. playing versus tight AA only 3b range

a) 50bb deep
Cold call QJT8ds+, JT98ds+

b) 100bb deep
Cold call JJT9ds+, 7766ds+, higher single suit and lower double suit rundowns like JT98ss 8765ds

2. playing versus wide 3b range (12%+) – 50/100bb deep

Cold call JJT9ds+, 7766ds+, JT98ss/QJT8ss+ ABB9ss

Mario’s Startegy:

His philosophy: Cold calling 3-bets sucks because of many reasons, some of them being poor relative position and not having the initiative. That’s why he either 4bets or folds.

4-betting with rundowns and hands like 7766ds actually makes sense because you prefer being HU with that hands to clean your flush outs.

BUT BEWARE 200bb deep a hand like 7766ds is a fold because of reverse implieds while a hand like AQQxss can be a call for implieds.

Playing Paired Boards with Overpairs and Air

HU – Air: Always Cb (55% if one and done / 40% 55% if going for 2-bar)

HU – Overpair: Always Cb 40% 55% IP/OOP wet/dry

3way – Air: OOP only on super dry like A22r IP on dryish like KK2 or 552 but be prepared to 2-bar ont he latter, again 40% 55%

3way – Overpair: Always Cb IP/OOP 40% (even on wet!)

Calling tight AA heavy 4-bets 100bb deep

Until shown otherwise assume people are only 3betting AA and strong KK unless they are being spewmonkeys over a larger sample and you have strong reasons to assume otherwise.

Double pocket pairs:

  • If not connected must be ds, ex. TT44ds. If connected single suit is okay like 9977ss. 150bb deep or greather also connected rainbow is okay for ex. 9977r or TT44ss.

Single pocket pairs:

    • If connected single suit is enough, ex. 9987ss. EXCEPTIONS are KKQJ/QQJTss which NEED to be double suited because of the proximity effect unless 150bb deep.
    • If unconnected like KK87 MUST be double suited. 150bb deep decetly connected like KK87 can be calls and also totally unconnected hands like KKT4 become calls if double suited.
    • If containing an ace MUST be double suited and connected like ATT9ds and below while AJJTB/AQQBds are still folds because of the proximity while 150bb deep we can start calling.

Non-ace Rundowns:

  • All rundowns are ofc calls, the only thing to note is that even rainbow rundowns become calls 150bb depp+. Marginal hands like KQJ*ds are breakeven calls.

Ace-containing Rundowns:

AJT9ds and below is a call, else fold. Also fold all the unconnected double suited hands. A987/876ss can be calls 150bb deep.

SPR 1 means we need 33% equity to stackoff. That means 8 clean outs on the flop (8 x 4 = 32%).

We get those 8 outs already from having one bare pair OTF so we should be calling in that spot:

Ex. villain 4-bets us, we call with a rundowns with which we 3-bet, spr otf = 1 and villain pot bets allin, we have a pair ie. two pair redraws versus villain overpair

If there’s an ace on the board making villain top set in a 4bp we still need 8 outs, BUT clean outs, because some of the time villain will make full house so that means in reality we need 11 outs at least that is FD+gutter or 12 outer straight draw.

If we remember studying cheat sheets for playing vs 4bets with a range of only AA**!AAA. Against that range I learned that we should defend ABB9 or AQJT and below only if double suited and if we’re 125bb-150bb+ deep.

So seeing a 3b here made me want to fold at first glance since villain is tight and we have an Ace(dangler). Then I remembered that 5-6% 3b range isn’t only AA**!AAA but mostly strong aces, premium kings and strong suited rundowns but I was still erroring on the side of folding.

Then I pluged in some numbers:

HU vs a pot sized 3b we need 33% equity to call(not factoring in that we’ll be OOP postflop and won’t be able to realize our all equity) so vs AA**!AAA range only it’s true we should fold this hand since we only have 29% to begin with.

Hand |Pot equity |
AhKdJh8c|29.70% |
AA!AAA|70.30% |

Then I took 4% and 6% 3b IP ranges from PJ to see how I was doing:

Hand |Pot equity |
AhKdJh8c|43.92% |
3bIP6%|56.08% |

Hand |Pot equity |
AhKdJh8c|38.20% |
3bIP4%|61.80% |

As we can see it’s a clear CALL against that ranges. SO be careful to differenciate tight 4bets from tight 3bets. How to play in 3bp you can find here.

How things change when another person joins the pot giving us better odds?

Hands that are folds 100bb deep but calls 150bb deep now become calls when 3w 100bb deep:

AQQJds or ATTxds
TT44ss or 9977r
ABB9ds or ABBBds
KK87ss or KKT4ds

How To Play Monotone Boards

3way IP/OOP with air = cb 1/2

3way IP/OOP with a set = cb 1/2 *(IP with a set = XB if straight DRAW NOT POSSIBLE so there’s less to protect from – IF a straight draw is possible then also better to Cb)

4w = check no matter what with a set or air

IF called FLOP, OTT xF or XB with sets and air.

What about medium/low made flushes?

Standar when is to check back but versus passive fish that calls any 2p/set/strong SD/flush we can bet Tx+ flushes whle triple barreling Qh+ flushes. OOP = check call so that we can read villain range better and let them bluff.
